Book Four, “Brave New World”
Book Count: 4
Title: Brave New World
Author: Aldfous Huxley
Genre: Fiction
Pages: 268
Synopsis: “Community, Identity, Stability” is the motto of Aldous Huxley’s utopian World State. Here everyone consumes daily grams of soma, to fight depression, babies are born in laboratories, and the most popular form of entertainment is a “Feelie,” a movie that stimulates the senses of sight, hearing, and touch. Though there is no violence and everyone is provided for, Bernard Marx feels something is missing and senses his relationship with a young women has the potential to be much more than the confines of their existence allow.
Thoughts: I’m reading this with my sister for another book club, but I’d also read it in high school. As I’ve begun to read it again, I’m wondering if the seasoned reader in me has become jaded to such a thought provoking novel. So far, I’m finding it rather boring. I remember being very moved and inspired by this novel the senior year of high school. Perhaps it’s just the beginning, when all the science behind the society is being explained.
Shifting gears.
If you’ve noticed a drop in blogging about my dieting – it’s because I’ve stopped dieting. It was just jeopardizing my breastfeeding too much. So, I’m going to keep tracking what I’m eating but I really am not “caring” about what I’m eating.
To offset my inability to diet I’ve begun to exercise. I mentioned I wanted to buy an elliptical and after much searching – I found one on Craigslist. It was a steal at half the original purchase price and 2/3 the closeout price from the manufacturer. It’s hardly been used – and it’s really great so far. It has these programs built-in programs, and I’m using the weight loss one right now. It’s starting me off at 20 minutes for the first program and I think it goes as high as six programs. I’ve done it for the past two nights and I hope to keep it up at least five days a week if not every night. It’s very easy, quick, and comfortable so I don’t see why not.
My sister, now that she’s recovered from her health problems, has decided to get back into shape as well. She didn’t really like SparkPeople and instead joined DailyBurn. Since I’m trying to encourage my sister – and appreciate her encouragement – I decided to join that as well.
They have a free iPhone app , which allows me to track everything that SparkPeople does. They also have a paid complimentary program that allows you to scan the UPC of the food you’re eating to track it. It was only a dollar and it got glowing reviews so I bought it. So far it’s worked just as everyone said and it’s a big time saver since it works directly with the DailyBurn website and the DailyBurn iPhone app.
Last Week: Part One, Family in Pain
Last week was a hard one, and I was dealing with a few things so I’m going to split them up into a few posts instead of just one huge one.
We found out on Wednesday that my sister had a miscarriage. She was at 14 weeks when she found out, though they said the baby likely stopped developing at 12 weeks. This would have been my sister’s 3rd child. I left work early to be with her, but I felt as though I couldn’t offer much than company – as there is really nothing that can make a mother feel better after a miscarriage. Luckily she’s taking a lot of comfort from her two sons and she’s taking each day as they come.
My husband’s grandfather, who is nearing 90 years old, went into the hospital early last week (in fact, it was the weekend before) and hasn’t left and likely never will. He’s dealing with a lot of health issues that started with a pneumonia and has turned into a mild heart attack, kidney failure and a staff infection. His kidneys are only working at 12% and they want to jump-start them by pumping a lot of fluids in him but his heart is so weak his body can’t deal with the extra fluids. Fluid is filling his lungs from the pneumonia and when they tried to extract it they found that it was actually a gelatinous material. Lung surgery placed him in the ICU because his lungs were so weak from 65 years of smoking and he now has some internal bleeding that is causing him to lose blood in a rate quicker than they can pump it in him.
Paul’s mother is very close with her parents, and she’s very emotional to begin with, so Paul went down there to support her on Saturday and ended up staying the entire weekend. It’s after he’s gone that I realize how much I depend on him. I want him there for his mother but I really hope he doesn’t have to leave for another weekend. If it were just Evy I had to take care I could probably “survive” but I’ve also got our dog Ripley and our cat Junior. Both of which are not very demanding but you put all three together and I’m over-whelmed. Needless to say, I was happy to have him home last night.
Let’s hope it continues!

I’m having a good morning so far!
I had a terrible night’s sleep – but I woke up surprisingly refreshed and ready to start the day. I made good time – which was needed because I was carpooling for once. I wasn’t able to eat breakfast though, but luckily someone brought donughts. I forgot to find my new debit card to replace my expired, but luckily because I was using my banks ATM it accepted it anyhow which means I can pay for our Boss’ Day Luncheon we’re throwing.
Now I just pray the rest of my morning goes as well!
Yesterday I spent the day with my sister and I had a great time, as always
Last night – while trying to kill time before Rebecky’s shows and me waiting for Paul to get home from watching Zombieland – we went to Target. Evy has grown out of a lot of her warm stuff and now that’s it’s getting cold I’m wildly unprepared. She’s also grown out of her size 2 diapers. So we went to Target and I got diapers, wipes, two warmer outfits, two warmer pajamas, the CUTEST set for my nephew Elijah, and an adorable hat (so pictured) for Evy. Target is EVIL!
I’m so glad it’s Friday. I’m exhausted.

I had SO much fun last night :)
My sister modeling some Claire's accessories. We went to only a few stores in the mall but we had a blast! I smelled so much afterward, but in a good way

Boring weekend update. Feel free to pass up :)
This weekend was busy. Saturday we woke early to make it to an eye doctor appointment. I've been going to the same guy since I was five, and his office is about an hour away, so we were lucky to get a Saturday appointment. First time ever going in on a Saturday – SO much quicker! My prescription hasn't changed, but I did get it updated so I'm able to order new contacts for myself. We also got Paul's contacts looked at – because he was reporting that the right one was blurry – and ordered a new one in the hopes that a new fit will fix the issue.
After the eye doctor, we drove straight to Paul's parents because we were already a good portion of the way there. It was nice to visit and we got to talk about how we hoped the birth would go. We were in a bit of a limbo because Paul & his mother had talked and decided she was going to stay with us for a few days after the birth. I'm not really comfortable with that – I really just wanted it to be Paul & I so we could have that ultimate bonding time with Evy. I'm only getting six weeks of exclusive "baby time" and I'm going to be selfish with all of it. His parents are welcome to come and see her any other time – but the first few weeks are mine & Paul's. If I had my way – I'd be bedridden with a large "NOT WELCOME" sign on the front door for the first two weeks. I know people are anxious to see newborn babies but let me heal and relax, please!!!
We left their place around six, because we were going to be helping my Dad fix his computer, but then he called and suggested that we move it to Sunday. So we ended up staying in the area and watching Watchmen again, this time with his parents. We ended up not getting home until midnight – which was insane – but it was Saturday and Paul drove home so it was fine.
Sunday we did go help my Dad with is computer, and it turned into a four hour task. Not surprising really, next time I'm just going to insist that my Dad unhook the computer and let us either pick it up or have him drop it off. We didn't leave there until after eight, and as a result didn't get ANYTHING done that we needed to. Had to go out for breakfast today as we had no food. We were lucky to get laundry done so I we had clean clothes to wear and a clean towel to shower with. I'm a "Sunday Preparer" – so it really threw a wrench in my spokes. But! We made some good progress with his PC – even if we didn't fix it entirely – and that's all that we can hope sometimes.
Anyhow – busy weekend
OH! And my sister still hasn't had her baby. How lucky would that kid be to be born on a lucky holiday like St Patty's Day?
