iPhone Beefs

This list might keep growing – not sure.

  1. Why can’t I add words to the Custom Dictionary? I like my names, days, months, & more capitalized.
  2. Why can’t I change the size of the font? I have no problem with my eyes and prefer a smaller font.
  3. Why is there no way to change the number of times you’re reminded that you have an alert? Being reminded twice is not enough.
  4. WHY CAN’T I SYNC WIRELESSLY?!?!?!?!?! I don’t want to be forced to either purchase multiple cables for all my power/syncing locations or carry a very obvious WHITE cable around with me. Even my Sidekick which wasn’t even characterized as a “smartphone” had wireless synchronization.
  5. They need to find a why to show that you have an alert without having to wake the screen (or waste battery life by never having the screen sleep). A lot of smartphones have small lights that flash. I want some flashing lights!!!

For now, that is all.

End of an era.

Well, as some of you may have noticed – I got an iPhone.

Its seems so quick, I was just posting about THINKING of going to another wireless carrier and then it happened. It was time though. It wasn't until I showed interest in possibly giving up my Sidekick that Paul let out this stream of complaints he's been dealing with on account of T-Mobile because he knew how much I loved my Sidekick. Plus, my sister's Sidekick (my old Sidekick III) has stopped charging (something having to do with the connection inside – the battery is fine) and so she was dreading having to find the money for a new one. Its sad how much they are when you don't get any discounts – it shows you how much the phone is really worth (meaning, if they can sell them for so cheap – they must not be worth the hundreds of dollars they fully retail for). So, everyone's happier for it since Paul gets the better service and my sister doesn't have to buy a new phone.

I'm sad though. After I got confirmation from T-Mobile that I could cancel without paying an ETF, Paul was ready – he wanted to go back into the store RIGHT THEN and get new phones. I wasn't ready though and flashes of me having to hand over the keys to my Jetta kept coming back. I'd had my Sidekick for so long, I identified with it as silly as that sounds. Hell, the name of my Vox is "from the sidekick"! My two email addresses have the word Sidekick in them. Whenever I was looking for my phone I didn't say, "Hey, have you seen my phone?" I always said, "Hey – have you seen my Sidekick?" I loved my phone.

But, I can't forget the fact that recently, I have been wanting a new phone. Something that was widely supported and had more applications – not just stupid theme creators and overpriced games. I was ready for that, that's for sure. Plus, I was ready for something mainstream and applicable to my age. I hated the teeny-bopper persona that the Sidekick had – despite it's rock solid OS and ingenious design. But, now that I think about it, I feel older without my Sidekick – it had that fun ninja kick to it that assured me I wasn't past having fun yet – despite how my job makes me feel occasionally.

In truth, I haven't bonded with it yet. I came into work on Sunday to load iTunes on my PC so I could sync my calendar & contacts thinking that would make it feel more like "mine" – but it didn't. Its just going to take some time. Maybe a fun case? Oh I don't know.

For anyone out there that has an iPhone, I have some questions:

  • Is there anyway to have it check my spelling while I type? Particularly text messages? I found some apps that did it via EMAIL with automatic copy & pasting but I want in-line text message spell checking.
  • Is there anyway for it to notify me that I have an unanswered alert without taking it out of sleep? With my Sidekick, the trackball would blink different colors – green for no alerts, blue for an alert, and red for the battery dying. I know that right now it'll notify me TWICE that I have a new message but I often need more than twice.
  • Is there anyway to delete preloaded applications? I don't follow stocks, use voicemail, or need weather and I'm sick of shifting the damn things.
  • Can I change the font size in the web browser? I know how to zoom in & out, I'm talking about font sizes on mobile pages that you can't zoom in & out.

I'm a bit shocked by how little settings I have the ability to change – I was expecting a plethora! But when I go to the settings area its really nothing. Is this an iPhone thing or a Mac thing?

Bits and bobs. LONG.

I'm feeling awake this morning – and I can't help but noticed how quiet everything is. I think I might go hunting on Vox for new blood, any suggestions?

Last night I completely forgot that my MiL was coming over today to watch Evy – so I didn't clean AT ALL. Instead we went to the mall and I bought Rhythm Heaven. Luckily, with the recent attack of ants we've been keeping the house fairly clean. Made even more so by the recent BRILLIANT purchase of a small drying rack. I'd never needed one before, as we had a dishwasher, however the small bottles I use with my breast pump cannot survive the dishwasher and I'm forced to hand wash them. We were just placing a clean dish towel on the counter and letting them dry there but we're pretty low on counter space so it was getting annoying.

Evy had a restless night, I think it was the Chinese food I ate. She was tossing and turning so much this morning I skipped on breakfast in order to nurse her a third time since 4:45am – didn't seem to help so we just placed her in the swing in the hopes the rocking would soothe her.

I went to a Union meeting yesterday. Despite the fact that our contract was up in April we still haven't come to an agreement in negotiations. I was disappointed, however not surprised, to hear that our COLAs are completely off the table this term. I was however surprised to hear that my employer is asking for us to pick up the medical cost increase of 3%. When I first heard it was what was holding up negotiations I thought, "Well that's just silly – they're paying everything else why don't we just pick up the rest?" But then I heard the details: We're offered two brands of health care and only one brand will actually be increasing. If my employer pays the 3% then it's only about $140K for the year because they can just pay the difference of the one brand. However, if we pay it – then we're actually going to be paying close to $500K for the year because ALL employees will be contributing – rather than just the employees who choose the health care brand that costs more. To top it off, we found out that moving to a flex schedule (10 hours a day/4 days a week) would save close to $500K a year however my employer doesn't even want to consider it. So not only are they NOT implementing cost saving ideas, they're also going to make us pay because they need to save money. Just not fair. They need to give in order to get just like us.

Evy & I went to the beach on Wednesday with Jose & his daughter. I got sun burnt in a few places; along my scalp where my hair was parted, my hands (from pushing the stroller), a little on my face, and a little across my chest – its strange getting burnt on your hands and just painful on your scalp.

Oh! I found out yesterday that the new Sidekick LX has been released since May – missed that. Went to the T-Mobile store to check it out and noticed that their required data plan was $34.99 (unlimited everything). I asked them if I'd have to pay that price if I upgraded to the new phone even though I'm a previous Sidekick owner and pay the old rate of $20. They said that since I was grandfathered in they could lower it to $24.99 a  month, though I wouldn't get unlimited texting. FUCK THAT. The only reasons I have T-Mobile is because of my Sidekick and the great unlimited package I got with it. If in order to get a new Sidekick when the time comes I have to tack on an extra $15 a month, then I'm done with T-Mobile. I've always liked their customer service better than Verizon, but its not worth paying as much as with a more reliable coverage service just to get good customer service. It'll be awhile until I switch of course, because when I do I'll want to finally move to an open application such as an Android/iPhone or maybe a Blackberry – and that'll take some cash since Paul will need it too. Sad to realize that soon my Sidekick era will be over – I've had one since 2006.

I’m wired with no where to go!

I cracked open a monster when I wasn't even tired. BAD idea. I'm bouncing off the walls! Hopefully I can deflate before my 3pm meeting.

Did I mention my Sidekick has spell check? Yep! I misspelled "deflate" and it set me right again :) I love my Sidekick – I should name it!

Go, go, gadet THEME!

The other day I was browsing through the download catalog on my Sidekick and found some half-way decent themes as I don't really like the default ones. However, I could never pay $2.99 for a theme ($1.99 if all you want is the background image) if I didn't have to – which I don't. If your Sidekick has a memory card – which the Sidekick iD didn't – then you can just create your own!

I went hunting for my old Sidekick theme creator site. I assumed that they would update their site to reflect the new Sidekick settings – but I was wrong and a bit bummed. The new Sidekick has such a better screen resolution that the old themes I'd used were over pixelated when I tried to use them. Upon closer inspection, I realized that there was a secondary site – different from the first – made just for the Sidekick LX which has the same screen resolution size as the Sidekick 2008. Browsing through these sites are nightmares because you can create whatever theme you want and upload them and most are terrible. The images are badly edited, some are NSFW, and there are THOUSANDS.

I found one good one and followed that one to many other good ones by following the creator. This guy really does a good theme because instead of just making a background image he also added custom bubbles (those small icons that sit behind the application icons in the half circle to the left), a different background for the folder screen and even a keyguard picture. In short, the full package. The only thing he didn't do was add sounds for when the screen is opened & closed but I'm a bit glad because now I can do that myself :) I was happy because it even matched my shell colors – as I'm using two different ones that happen to look well together.

Sidekick-y Goodness!

Paul & I both have Bluetooth on our phones – and we're having a geeky amount of fun beaming random things to each other. I found out I can send pictures from my Flickr via email & Bluetooth on my phone from the mobile Flickr – which is awesome. I can also save images off the net to my phone – time for a bigger memory card!

Now with more kung-fu kick!

I got a new phone last night! But don't worry – if that's even possible – it's still a Sidekick :) I upgraded to the newest one, simply called "Sidekick" – it's also being referred to as "Sidekick 2008". I heard about it awhile ago and didn't think much of it because my Sidekick was still working fine. I'm generally not the kind of person to drop perfectly working tech for newer tech simply because it's newer. However, that was before I saw it and found out that it would be only half of what I paid for my Sidekick 3. So I just did it – and I'm really glad that I did.

New & Improved Features (over my Sidekick 3)

  • It's thinner, not as wide/tall, and so therefore lighter
  • The screen resolution & brightness is better
  • I can choose font sizes
  • It has a built in alarm clock (silly, I know – why didn't they ALL have this?!)
  • I can now retrieve my Yahoo mail without paying for Yahoo Plus
  • I can separate my email by accounts, so I have a tab for Tmail, Yahoo & Gmail
  • I can receive picture messaging now! Before, people had to send them to my email address
  • My web browser has a "mini page" which allows me to scroll to the bottom of a page quickly
  • Built in camera has been bumped up from 1.3mp to 2mp! Slightly better pictures :P
  • I can now record video!
  • I can change (and create custom designs for) the hard outer shell – while before I had to buy sticker-like skins

P1020718 P1020720 P1020721 P1020727 P1020726 P1020723

The only bad news – and I suppose everyone deals with this when they get a new phone – is that I've lost all my applications & ringtones. A positive thing in disguise as I hadn't bought anything new in awhile as I thought, "I've got plenty".

Vox Hunt: The Gadgets I Carry

Show us the gadgets you carry with you.

I used to carry my small digital camera around with me too, and I've really been missing that. I told Paul I want to go ahead and buy a new small point & shoot to put in my purse again – I'm going mad without it!!!

Technology QotD: Better than sliced bread!

What is the one electronic device that has changed your life the most? Has it been a blessing or a curse?
Submitted by Aubrey.

I'd have to say my Sidekick. It's been a blessing, the only curse being my dependency on it. I've only had it for about a year and a half and I really wonder what I did before that. I remember my last two phones (I've only had three mobile phones) and they were so… basic and unhelpful compared to my Sidekick. I like to compare my Sidekick to a swiss army knife because it does so much in so little. Its my safety net. My troubleshooter. My…sidekick :)

Hmm, I really need to take a new picture. I no longer have that skin and I've changed my visuals on the screen too.
