So long, and thanks for all the fish.

I don’t know if I misunderstood Picasa the last time I downloaded it and tried to use it on my PC – or if they’ve made some significant changes to the UI – but can I just say… I think I’m in love?

I’ve successfully corralled & organized all the pictures on my PC (and external drive), and prepped my pictures for the cloud. Working with actual folders rather than sets makes the process quicker as I’m not passing around a bunch of duplicates. I even used the facial recognition portion of the software :D

As soon as I’ve got some free cash I’m going to pay the ransom on my photos from Flickr and get the hell out of there. Its a great service for sharing random images (embed codes are priceless), but I realize it’s not for me in regards to IRL pictures.

Not sure if I’m going to use Picasa’s web albums (have no idea how much I want to store, so I don’t know how much it would cost) but as least I can start getting my own backups created and stored safely.

Help!

Help!, originally uploaded by ☼maura☼.

Paul and I took some pictures of Evy at the park. We haven’t had a lot of time to figure out how to use all the settings correctly on our DSLR – and this is the result.

Can anyone help me out with correcting it? Is it even salvageable?

EDIT:

Its salvagable! Thanks everyone for helping me out! Hopefully next time I can post a decent picture :P

Let’s organize!

I’ve been feeling off recently. I’m not sure why. Its probably a lot of things – so I’m going to spew my mind here for a bit – you’ve been warned :)

Bounce result from 270-EX

I bought a new flash for my camera. We originally bought the Canon 270-EX, but I found it too limiting because it would only work on the automatic setting. I really liked the results that I did get from it though, particularly the bounce. I went rooting online – specifically eBay – and found a flash brand, YongNuo, that produces a much more feature rich flash for a much lower cost. Almost 1/3 the cost. I did some research on Flickr and found quite a few people use them, and said that they are a great alternative. I figure, for 1/3 the cost I’m willing to take the chance of failure that seems to be pretty low for the casual photographer. I ordered it last Friday and they said it can take between 5-14 business days to get to me. Let’s hope that I can figure it out!

Cotton Pouchee

For my birthday I bought myself a purse organizer, and I’m waiting anxiously for it to be delivered. I started out by looking at purses that were great for organizing, but I found the search VERY frustrating. For one thing, the pictures were horrific. I mean, if you’re selling a product for organization, can you please show some pictures of the inside with some common items ? Or at the very least, describe how many pockets the bag has and where they’re located. The only places I could find pocket bags were on travel sites and they were nice, but it was a shot in the dark and they were expensive. I’m willing to pay good money for a bag I’ll use day in and day out for months if not years at a time, but not without knowing what I’m getting to begin with. But then I ran across the fact that they make purse organizers, which can be pulled out and put into any purse, and I realized THAT was what I was looking for. I tried a brand called Pouchee, and I just hope I choose the right one. The other one I was debating about was the Kangaroo Keeper, but it didn’t seem as good of quality (plus, because it was “as seen on TV” the only purchase option was to buy one set, get one set free, but you had to pay s&h for both sets. The total cost would have been close to $40 and I don’t need TWO sets – I don’t even need one set. I just needed one) even if it did have some advantages over the Pouchee.

We were pretty broke during my birthday this year, so it was really low key but nice and relaxing. My sister made me a cake! Then we watched this super depressing LONG movie on Netflix called “Passengers” – which we though was going to be a crime mystery but really ended up being sad and depressing. Paul and Evy got me the sweetest cards, and like I said – it was very nice. On Sunday I got my nails done and I also saw “Knight & Day” with my sister. It was good, but not great. I really enjoyed Cruise’s comedic timing but I felt that some of the jokes were predictable and that the progression of the story line was rushed and stagnant at the same time. We saw it at a discounted price, and was glad.

The trifecta… well not really.

My new camera is proving to be a bit of work.

First, I’ve found that I can’t work directly from the memory card – I have to pull all the files from the card in order to upload them to Flickr. Second, I’ve found that my built-in card reader in my monitor at work (where I do most of my uploading) is not compatible with high capacity cards – so my $75 SDHC card can only be read if I have it in the camera and the camera connected to the PC. Not that big of a deal really – I had just gotten used to removing the card and taking only the card to my work to upload my files. Third, I’ve found that either my connection at work is poor (which isn’t unbelievable), Flickr upload speed is poor (which is also believable), or the pictures are just plum too large because I’m having difficulties uploading more than three at a time! I took over 200 during Father’s Day weekend and so this is going to take FOREVER.

I’d like to wait a bit until I get home to do this – to see if the later time of the day or the faster connection will make a difference, but I’ve already downloaded & deleted all the files from my memory card so I’m a bit stuck. Well, lesson learned. I should have known, considering when I tried to download a digital copy of a movie through iTunes while at work it took THREE DAYS.

Tomorrow I want to go to the park with the kids again – and take more pictures. I just love taking pictures again!!!

Suggestions!

Does anyone know how I can get the same play-in-window capabilities for media as I did with Vox WITHOUT having to buy a space upgrade here on WordPress? I’d be much more willing to buy a space upgrade if it wasn’t $20 for only 5GBs – EACH YEAR. I don’t even think I’d use 5GBs worth but I still feel like I’m getting ripped off. I already pay for a Pro account with Flickr, I’m sick of paying for websites to hold my stuff.

I had no idea that what Vox did, allowing users up upload and listen to full tracks, was anything special – but apparently it is!

All you have to do is put square brackets around the photostream (or profile) link.

Examples:

You can also put square brackets around individual photo page URLs and set URLs to get the small size of the photo and set thumbnail respectively.

Hopefully a few other Voxers get interested!

I want to make a Vox group for people who like instant film, but when I tried to find anyone with tags pretaining to "instant film" or "polaroid" or even the new "fujifilm" items, I come up empty. When looking around on Flickr a lot of the pictures are great but no one fills out the descriptions :( Frustrating especially when I'm looking at pictures in the peel-apart film group I joined. I'd love to know which camera they were using to get such an amazing shot – but the tags are cryptic 9 times out of 10.

What a relief.

Fuji Instax 200, originally uploaded by Espressobuzz.

I was just outbid on one of the cameras. Let's just hope I keep this other one because that's still a better deal than buying it new.

This is a picture I found on Flickr – a good representation of what the size of the camera is (not pocket sized :P ) and also how the film looks.

I've kind of already decided that I want to get one whether I have to pay full price or not…

A love hate relationship.

I love Yahoo – I've been with them since I began choosing a search engine and web-based email provider. I've never had too big of a beef with them and they're generally very intuitive when it comes to how their software works with others. However, the more and more I blog – and try to include images as demonstrations in my blogs – the more and more I get irritated with Yahoo image search.

I love Flickr, I really do, however I hate that when you find a good image on Flickr you likely can't use it. I respect photographers and I'm not going to print-screen someone who is obviously aware of how they want their work used. But when all Yahoo gives me is Flickr images I can't use – it's irritating. I don't want to have to clip & then edit clipped posts in order to get an image from the net.

I've resorted to using Google image search now because all I want is a quick shot of an orange or traffic moving on a freeway. Is that so hard to ask? I thought that Yahoo would allow you to exclude certain sites – but no matter how hard I try I can't seem to figure it out. Does anyone out there know the search syntax I should be using to exclude a site?

Sidekick-y Goodness!

Paul & I both have Bluetooth on our phones – and we're having a geeky amount of fun beaming random things to each other. I found out I can send pictures from my Flickr via email & Bluetooth on my phone from the mobile Flickr – which is awesome. I can also save images off the net to my phone – time for a bigger memory card!
