Book 23, “The Passage” Cont.

I’m still working on this book. I know that it’s been ages since I started it – but its a very long book. I’m only a little more than halfway through, and I feel like the first half of the book was another book entirely. Perhaps that’s why Cronin called it “The Passage”, because it’s about the passage of one story into another.

** Spoilers **

The first half of this book was about one set of characters, and now that we’re over 100 years into the future, its of course about another set of characters. I was disappointed once the second half started because I felt like the author really dropped the ball in regards to coherent story telling. I understand the challenges of trying to tell a story about time changing and giving the illusion that no one really knows anything about the past. But I don’t believe that excuses away the fact that I was lost for the first three chapters. I had no idea which character was which and what was going on. Cronin was jumping from 1st person to 3rd person so often and without any clear markers that it wasn’t until half way through a chapter that I realized which one it was. Very confusing. However, I feel we’ve moved past that – so the book has become more chronological which has alleviated a lot of my confusion.

I’m at the point in the book where The Night of Blades & Stars has just occurred, and we’re still finding out exactly what happened. All I know is that everyone is going crazy and I have no idea why! What is happening with everyone?! Are they becoming virals telepathically?! What did Michael find on the chip? He indicated that it contained “everything”, but what is “everything”? Also, why would the military fill a chip with the worlds history and implant it into Amy? Did they anticipate that the world would go to pot? If so, that sucks.

I was excited to see the reintroduction of Amy, but I’m still waiting for something interesting to happen with her. The book opens with Amy, so I feel like she’s the key – right? I was sadden to hear that she had forgotten Wolfgast’s name – even if it had been 100 years – as he was the one who saved her when it all went to shit. I’m glad she still remembers him, even if not his name.

** Spoilers **

So far I’m really enjoying the book. I find that my reading bug has really infected me ever since I joined the book club – and I’m so glad! I love to read!!! I just wish I had more time, so I could concentrate on one book and not have to read many at once.
